Introduction
Are you truly united with Christ, or merely attached to Him? One of the most sobering realities in Scripture is that proximity to Christ is not the same thing as union with Christ.
Jesus said this on the night of His betrayal, hours before the cross. Yet what filled His thoughts that evening was not His approaching death, but the state of the disciples He was about to leave behind. And already, a contrast had formed. Eleven remained faithful; one, Judas, did not. “You are clean, but not every one of you,” Jesus told them in (John 13:10). Judas received the bread and “immediately went out. And it was night.” The false disciple departed. The true disciples stayed.
It is against that backdrop that Jesus speaks of the vine and the branches; and forces a question none of us can avoid: what kind of branch are you? Are you truly united to Him, or only, falsely, attached?
The Marks of a False Branch
Jesus says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” He then names the first kind of branch:
“Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away.” (v. 2)
And again:
“If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.” (v. 6)
Who are these fruitless branches? These are not genuine believers who somehow lost their salvation; Jesus Himself said elsewhere, “My sheep hear my voice … they shall never perish” (John 10:27–28). The issue here is not lost salvation. It is false profession.
These are people who appear connected to Christ but were never truly united to Him. Fruit does not create life rather it reveals life. We do not become believers by bearing fruit; we bear fruit because we have been made alive in Christ. So, a total absence of spiritual fruit is serious evidence of a false union with Christ. Where there is absolutely no evidence of transformation; no hunger for God, no love for Christ, no growing obedience, no desire for holiness, no concern for sin, there is reason to question whether genuine conversion has ever occurred.
This is uncomfortable, but it is the point of the passage. Like Judas, it is possible to walk among God’s people for years, speak the language, and take part in every activity, and still lack saving faith. Judas’s problem was never occasional sin, the eleven sinned too. Peter denied Christ; Thomas doubted. What set Judas apart was a heart never touched by grace. His proximity to Christ was never union with Christ.
That warning is still relevant. There are many who know Christianity without knowing Christ; who can argue the doctrines but do not have Jesus as their Savior; who love the benefits of church while remaining strangers to its Head; who admire Jesus but have never surrendered to Him.
So, examine yourself 2 Corinthians 13:5 asks us to: “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith” What evidence is there that Christ has changed you? Is your life marked by the fruit of the Spirit as stipulated in Galatians 5; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control?
You can be connected to Christ’s church and still not be saved. This is a good example of such individual and a real scenario in (John 6:66) “Many of his disciples went back and no longer walked with him”; they identified with Christ, but never united to Him.
There are many Judas-like branches today: people outwardly attached to Christ with no inward life; people who do good to cover their own guilt; people going through the motions to satisfy a believing family. They want salvation on their own terms, not His.
Jesus is saying: I have had one Judas. Please, be a real branch, abide in Me. Fruit does not save, but it reveals. No fruit reveals no life. No life reveals no union. No union reveals no salvation.
Conclusion
Verse 6 warns of the fate of the fruitless branch; cast off, withered, gathered, and burned. Jesus is speaking of judgment here, not correction. It is possible to hold the Christian tag, grow up in church, even serve in ministry, and still miss out on Christ Himself.
So: are you truly united with Christ, or resting in church attendance, good morals, or a Christian heritage? Are you washed in His blood by faith?
